How to Grow Your Email List from Scratch (Even If You're Starting at Zero)

Starting an email list from zero can feel intimidating. You might be wondering who would even sign up, what you would send them, or whether email marketing is even worth it when social media is right there.

Here's the truth: your email list is the only audience you truly own. Social media platforms change their algorithms, accounts get hacked, and followers disappear overnight. Your email list is yours: no algorithm, no platform, no middleman between you and your audience.

I grew my own list from zero to 5,000 subscribers with a 60% open rate. Here's exactly how I'd do it if I were starting from scratch today.

Step 1: Create a Lead Magnet Worth Signing Up For

Nobody gives away their email address for nothing. You need to offer something genuinely valuable in exchange, this is called a lead magnet.

A great lead magnet is:

  • Specific — it solves one clear problem

  • Immediately useful — they can use it right away

  • Easy to consume — a checklist, template, short video, or guide works better than a 40-page ebook

Some lead magnet ideas that work really well for small business owners:

  • A free checklist or template

  • A short video training series

  • A resource guide or toolkit

  • A discount or exclusive offer

  • A free audit or assessment

The more specific your lead magnet is to your ideal customer, the better it will convert. "Free marketing tips" is vague. "Free Flodesk setup checklist for service providers" is specific and attracts exactly the right person.

Step 2: Set Up a Simple Signup Form and Landing Page

Once you have your lead magnet, you need a place to send people to sign up. In Flodesk, this is easy, you can create a beautiful signup form or full landing page in minutes.

Your landing page doesn't need to be complicated. It needs:

  • A clear headline that states exactly what they're getting

  • Two or three bullet points explaining the benefits

  • A simple form with name and email

  • A strong call to action button

Keep it focused. One offer, one form, one button. The more options you give people, the less likely they are to sign up.

Step 3: Drive Traffic to Your Signup Form

This is where most people get stuck. You have a lead magnet and a signup form, now how do you actually get people to find it?

Here are the most effective ways to drive traffic without a big budget:

Pinterest — Create pins pointing directly to your signup form. Pinterest is a search engine, meaning your pins can drive traffic for months or even years after you post them. This is one of my favorite strategies for growing an email list on autopilot.

Instagram — Add your signup form link to your bio and mention your freebie in your stories and posts regularly. Don't assume people saw it the first time — keep sharing it.

Your website — Add your signup form to your homepage, your about page, your blog posts, and your footer. The more places it appears the more signups you'll get.

Collaborations — Partner with someone in a complementary niche for a giveaway, a joint workshop, or a guest blog post. Their audience becomes your audience.

Word of mouth — Tell people. Mention it in emails, in your email signature, in Facebook groups, in conversations. It sounds simple because it is.

Step 4: Deliver a Great Welcome Experience

Growing your list is only half the equation. What happens after someone signs up matters just as much.

Set up a welcome sequence in Flodesk that automatically delivers your lead magnet and introduces who you are. First impressions matter — a warm, well-written welcome email sets the tone for the entire relationship.

Step 5: Show Up Consistently

The biggest mistake people make with email marketing is going quiet after the initial signup. Your list grows when people know what to expect from you and look forward to hearing from you.

You don't need to send emails every day. Even once or twice a month is enough to stay top of mind. The key is consistency — pick a cadence you can actually stick to and show up reliably.

Over time your subscribers will become your most loyal audience. They chose to hear from you directly, which means they're far more engaged than a social media follower who scrolls past your post without a second thought.

The Simple Truth About List Growth

Growing an email list doesn't require a huge following, a big budget, or complicated tech. It requires a valuable offer, a simple system, and consistent effort over time.

Start with one good lead magnet. Set up your Flodesk form. Share it everywhere. Show up for your subscribers. That's it.
