How To Bring Your Ferns Inside For Winter-Part 2
We have been bringing ferns inside for several years and learn something new every time! To read part one of our tips, you can click here. We live in the northeast (Connecticut), and it gets cold here, and the winter seems to drag on. Our ferns are probably inside for more of the year than they are outside. We bring them inside late October and bring them back out in June.
Also, when I saw ‘we’, I really mean Joe, my husband. Haha!
Here are the top 3 tips we have learned over the years:
Prep: Rinse them off very well before you bring them in. We take the hose to them and shake them off really well. Once dry, we also take the leaf blower to them to get off any bugs. This is a great time to cut off any dead parts. Ferns shed a lot, so the more you get off before they come inside, the better.
Care: Once a month, we soak our ferns. Just fill a large bucket with water (we do this in our basement) and dunk the fern in there, let it sit for about 30 minutes, and you’re good to go. I do water them when I water my other house plants, but the soaking really helps keep them moist.
Find the right spot in your home and leave them there! They need some sun, but not direct sunlight. They also love humidity, which our home lacks in the winter. Over the years, we have found the best spot in our home, it can take some trial!
One thing that didn’t work:
Last year, we saw someone share that they brought ferns in and stored them in the dark basement, untouched for the whole winter. We placed two of our ferns hanging from the ceiling in our basement and left them alone. Fast forward to spring, and we had some crunchy ferns that did not bounce back. Haha.
Do you bring your ferns inside? What tips do you have for us? We’d love to know!
